In this edition of The Line, we are proud to interview Michael Watts of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Fund's Fire Zone about his experience running a website dedicated to informing New York-area residents about the importance of fire safety. The Fire Zone website gives visitors a glimpse into the daily life of an FDNY firefighter, tips and information on preventing fires, plans for escaping a fire safely, and a large number of images and videos regarding fire safety. The website receives tens of thousands of visitors per month, helping to spread the message of safety to families in New York and world wide, as well as offering people the opportunity to help support the first responders that keep the city that never sleeps safe.

Jumpline.com: How long has the FDNY Fire Safety Education Fund been supporting the Fire Department City of New York, and when did the fund decide to set up the FDNY Fire Zone website?
Michael Watts: The FDNY Fire Safety Education Fund has been in existence since 12/31/81. A website was established for both education and retail sales in October 2000.

Jumpline.com: What is the mission of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Fund?
Michael: The New York City Fire Department's Fire Safety Education Fund is a not-for-profit foundation with a dual vital mission: To bring the message of fire safety and prevention to all New Yorkers and to support the efforts of the FDNY. The Fund provides support for a wide range of educational and public-awareness programs designed to reduce fires and fire fatalities for both the public and for New York City firefighters. The Fund also enhances the
FDNY's fire safety initiatives and makes possible much needed extra programs outside the Fire Department's existing budget.

Michael: The FDNY Fire Zone is the country's most advanced center for fire safety. Housed in a "fire house" in Rockefeller Center, the Zone immerses you in a unique experience where FDNY Firefighters guide you and help you become a Fire Prevention Team member. You'll realize you can play a major role in preventing fires and making your family safer. Learn how to keep your home safe by preventing fires. Climb aboard a fire engine and learn what it takes to be one of New York City's bravest.

Jumpline.com: What is the purpose of the FDNY Fire Zone website?
Michael: The Fire Zone website serves several purposes. It is an education tool to teach about fire safety and how you can keep your home and family safe from fire. It offers fire safety resources and activity kits for teachers, parents and kids. In addition the website hosts information regarding the Fire Zone Fire Safety Learning Center located in Rockefeller Center. The website also hosts the FDNY Fire Zone Retail online store. The Fire Zone is the "Official" store of the FDNY. Proceeds from the sale of Fire Zone products goes to support the work of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Fund.
