In this edition of The Line, we are
proud to interview Michael Watts of the FDNY Fire Safety Education
Fund's Fire Zone about his experience running a website dedicated
to informing New York-area residents about the importance of
fire safety. The Fire Zone website gives visitors a glimpse
into the daily life of an FDNY firefighter, tips and information
on preventing fires, plans for escaping a fire safely, and
a large number of images and videos regarding fire safety.
The website receives tens of thousands of visitors per month,
helping to spread the message of safety to families in New
York and world wide, as well as offering people the opportunity
to help support the first responders that keep the city that
never sleeps safe.
Jumpline.com: How long has the FDNY Fire Safety Education
Fund been supporting the Fire
Department City of New York, and when did the fund decide to
set up the FDNY
Fire Zone website?
Michael Watts: The FDNY Fire Safety Education
Fund has been in existence since 12/31/81. A
website was established for both education and retail sales in
October 2000.
Jumpline.com: What is the mission of the FDNY Fire Safety
Education Fund?
Michael: The New York City
Fire Department's Fire Safety Education Fund is a
not-for-profit foundation with a dual vital mission: To bring
the message of
fire safety and prevention to all New Yorkers and to support
the efforts of the
FDNY. The Fund provides support for a wide range of educational
and
public-awareness programs designed to reduce fires and fire fatalities
for both
the public and for New York City firefighters. The Fund also
enhances the
FDNY's fire safety initiatives and makes possible much needed
extra programs
outside the Fire Department's existing budget.
Jumpline.com: What is the FDNY
Fire Zone?
Michael: The FDNY Fire Zone
is the country's most advanced center for fire safety. Housed
in a "fire house" in Rockefeller Center, the Zone
immerses you in a unique
experience where FDNY Firefighters guide you and help you become
a Fire
Prevention Team member.
You'll realize you can play a major role in preventing fires
and making your
family safer. Learn how to keep your home safe by preventing
fires. Climb
aboard a fire engine and learn what it takes to be one of New
York City's bravest.

Jumpline.com: What
is the purpose of the FDNY Fire Zone website?
Michael: The Fire Zone
website serves several purposes. It is an education tool to teach
about fire safety and how you can keep your home and family
safe from fire. It
offers fire safety resources and activity kits for teachers,
parents and kids.
In addition the website hosts information regarding the Fire
Zone Fire Safety
Learning Center located in Rockefeller Center. The website also
hosts the FDNY Fire Zone Retail online store. The Fire Zone
is the "Official" store of the FDNY. Proceeds from
